Tema Newtown, Ashaiman, others to have access to water from today after repair works on Kpong Plant

Ghana Water Limited (GWL) has announced that residents in Tema Newtown, Ashaiman, and several other areas will begin to have access to water starting today, following the completion of repairs on a burst 42-inch transmission pipeline from the Kpong Water Treatment Plant.

Samuel Martey, Director of Communications at GWL, confirmed that the repair work, which disrupted water supply to the affected areas, was successfully completed on Monday evening. As a result, production at the Kpong Water Treatment Plant has resumed, and water supply is being restored.

Mr. Martey explained that areas such as Community 1-12, 25, 26, Tema Newtown, Ashaiman, Prampram, Afienya Mataheko, Sakumono, Batsonaa, Ghetseli, Dawhenya, and Kpone will start receiving water by this evening. However, residents in areas further from the plant may not see water until Wednesday afternoon.

“They will start seeing water supply from today into the evening, depending on where you live, and by tomorrow morning or afternoon, the situation should stabilize within the affected areas. It is a vast area,” Mr. Martey said.

In a statement issued on December 2, 2024, Dr. Samuel Ason, the Regional Chief Manager of GWL’s Tema Region, expressed regret for the inconvenience caused. He assured customers that “supply will be restored immediately” once the repairs were completed.

The burst pipeline had caused significant disruption, affecting thousands of residents, businesses, and institutions across the region. The Kpong Water Treatment Plant is a vital source of water for Tema and its surrounding areas, with such pipeline faults often leading to large-scale supply interruptions.
