The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) and the Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCo) have announced limited load management nationwide following a power supply shortfall caused by the temporary shutdown of some thermal power plants in Tema.
The shutdown resulted from operational challenges at the Tema Regulatory and Metering Station, triggered by ongoing cleaning and inspection work on the West African Gas Pipeline (WAGP) being carried out by the West African Gas Pipeline Company (WAPCo) in Nigeria.
In a joint statement, GRIDCo and ECG explained that the shutdown has impacted electricity generation, creating a need for load management. “This has caused a shortfall in power supply, requiring some limited load management in parts of the country,” the statement read.
The issue arose during WAPCo’s cleaning and inspection of a 56km x 30” onshore pipeline between Itoki and Badagry in Nigeria. WAPCo reported that a larger-than-expected volume of liquids and debris was received at the Lagos Beach Compressor Station, leading to operational upsets. “This has triggered some operational upsets at our Tema Regulatory & Metering Station requiring a temporary shutdown for safety reasons and investigation,” WAPCo noted.
GRIDCo and ECG expressed confidence in WAPCo’s ability to resolve the issue quickly. “We are optimistic that WAPCo will soon resolve the challenge and restore gas supply,” they stated.
The companies assured affected customers of their commitment to closely monitor the situation and provide timely updates. “We express our gratitude to our key stakeholders for their patience during this process and apologize for any inconvenience caused,” the statement added.
Meanwhile, customers have been encouraged to conserve power where possible and stay updated through official communications.
WAPCo reiterated its commitment to resolving the issue, expressing appreciation to all stakeholders for their understanding during the ongoing process.
