Nigerian Police warn against misusing IGP’s authority to intimidate others

The Nigeria Police Force has cautioned the public against misusing the office of the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, as a means of intimidation, emphasizing that such actions compromise the IGP’s commitment to impartiality.

This warning follows an incident involving Nigerian legislator Hon. Alexander Ikwegh, who allegedly assaulted Bolt driver Mr Stephen Abuwatseya during a delivery on October 27, 2024, at a residence on Zamfara Crescent in Maitama, Abuja.

According to initial reports, a disagreement over delivery procedures escalated, resulting in Hon. Ikwegh reportedly slapping the driver. When Mr. Abuwatseya mentioned involving the IGP, Hon. Ikwegh allegedly responded dismissively, saying, “Go ahead and call the Inspector General of Police.”

The FCT Police Command voiced concerns over the legislator’s apparent disregard for police authority. Hon. Ikwegh is currently undergoing questioning at the Maitama Police Station, while FCT Commissioner of Police, CP Olatunji Disu, has directed a thorough investigation to ensure accountability.

The Command assured the public of an unbiased investigation and reiterated that any attempts to misuse the office of the IGP would not be tolerated.
