Equatorial Guinea’s President, Obiang Nguema Mbasogo, has appointed Zenón Obiang Obiang Avomo as the new Director General of the National Agency for Financial Investigation (ANIF), after dismissing Baltasar Ebang Engonga amid a scandal involving alleged misconduct and inappropriate behavior.
Engonga’s removal was prompted by accusations of “irregularities committed in the exercise of his functions” as well as conduct deemed inappropriate for public office, as stated in Decree No. 118/2024, dated November 4.
The investigation into Engonga’s activities revealed over 400 video recordings found in his office, reportedly involving the wives and family members of high-ranking officials, including ministers and police officers.
The shocking revelations have sparked public outrage, leading the government to swiftly mandate the installation of surveillance cameras in all state offices to deter future misconduct and monitor officials’ conduct. In addition, other implicated officials have been suspended as part of the government’s effort to uphold ethical standards and restore public trust.
Taking over as Director General of ANIF, Avomo brings a strong background in law and finance.
A graduate of the National University of Equatorial Guinea, he has previously served as Magistrate Judge in Malabo, Director General of Contract Studies and State Markets at the Ministry of Finance, and Secretary General for both the Ministry of Finance, Economy and Planning, and the Ministry of Mines, Industry, and Energy.
