The North Tongu constituency has achieved a significant milestone in healthcare with 50 successful hernia surgeries conducted at the newly built John Evans Atta Mills Surgical Block.
The initiative, championed by the Member of Parliament for North Tongu, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, is part of his ongoing efforts to improve healthcare access and prioritize the well-being of his constituents. The surgeries, performed last week during a free medical outreach programme, were fully sponsored by the MP.
Expressing his appreciation for the medical team’s dedication, Mr. Ablakwa emphasized his commitment to sustaining the initiative. “Our North Tongu MP-sponsored quarterly free medical outreaches and surgeries will continue because your health remains my priority,” he said. “I am grateful to the team of incredibly dedicated medical professionals for this truly impactful partnership.”
What is a Hernia?
A hernia occurs when an organ or fatty tissue pushes through a weakened spot in the surrounding muscle or connective tissue, often forming a visible bulge. Common types include:
- Inguinal hernias (in the groin),
- Umbilical hernias (near the navel), and
- Hiatal hernias (affecting the upper stomach and chest).
Symptoms of Hernias
Hernias typically present as a noticeable lump in the affected area, often accompanied by pain or discomfort during physical activities like bending, coughing, or lifting heavy objects. Other symptoms include a sense of heaviness or weakness in the abdomen, and in severe cases, nausea, vomiting, or bowel difficulties.
Risks of Untreated Hernias
Untreated hernias can result in serious complications, such as strangulation, where the herniated tissue’s blood supply is cut off, leading to potentially life-threatening conditions that require emergency surgery.
