Systemic glitches and technical challenges have disrupted cargo clearance operations at the Tema Port, causing significant delays for shippers and related stakeholders.
The Ghana Shippers Authority (GSA), in a public announcement dated December 24, confirmed that these issues stem from recurring breakdowns of scanners at the MPS Terminal 3 and intermittent faults with the Integrated Customs Management System (ICUMS).
The GSA acknowledged the strain these challenges have placed on the logistics sector and assured stakeholders that strenuous efforts are underway to resolve the ongoing problems.
“The continuous breakdown of the scanner at the MPS Terminal 3, coupled with ICUMS glitches, has severely impacted the delivery and evacuation of containers,” the statement noted.
The Authority emphasized its commitment to ensuring that no shipper should bear costs for delays not caused by them. It further urged all affected parties, including consignees and service providers, to report cases of imposed or paid charges related to delays directly to the GSA. These reports will facilitate investigations and refunds where systemic failures are found to be the cause.
In its concluding remarks, the GSA reaffirmed its dedication to working with all stakeholders to restore efficiency to port operations. The statement also extended warm holiday wishes to the shipping community, expressing hope for a peaceful business season.
The persistent disruptions at Tema Port are a growing concern for the logistics and shipping industry, as stakeholders anticipate prompt solutions to mitigate further economic impacts.
