Wontumi FM presenter bailed after arrest for spreading false information

Oheneba Nana Asiedu, a Kumasi-based radio and television presenter with Wontumi FM, has been granted bail following his arrest by the Ghana Police Service for allegedly spreading false information.

The presenter was detained on Saturday after a video surfaced showing him making inaccurate claims about the voting schedule for the December 2024 general elections. In the clip, Oheneba Asiedu is heard stating that voters would cast their ballots for presidential candidates on separate dates—a claim the Police described as false and likely to disturb public peace.

It is currently unclear what bail conditions were set for his release.

Oheneba Asiedu was initially invited by the Ashanti Regional Police Command for questioning but was subsequently arrested and held in custody. The Police have assured the public that the case will be pursued in court to ensure justice.

In a statement, the Police urged media practitioners and the general public to prioritize accuracy and responsibility in their communication, particularly during the election period.

“We urge the public, particularly media practitioners, to exercise utmost caution and responsibility, and refrain from publishing false news which is likely to disturb public peace before, during, and after the upcoming general elections,” the statement read.

The Ghana Police Service reiterated its commitment to maintaining peace and order during the elections and warned that it would take decisive action against any individuals or groups whose actions threaten public safety.
