Schools in Obuasi closed for 48 hours due to security concerns

All schools in Obuasi and Obuasi East municipalities have been shut down temporarily following escalating tensions in the area.

Authorities have ordered the 48-hour closure to protect students and staff as the gold-mining town grapples with recent violent clashes.

The unrest stems from a confrontation between illegal miners and military personnel at a mining concession owned by AngloGold Ashanti. The skirmish reportedly began after miners breached a security barrier, leading to the deaths of seven individuals and multiple injuries.

Municipal Director of Education George Koomson explained that the decision to suspend classes was made in the interest of safety.

“We can’t guarantee the safety of both learners and teachers, so we’ve agreed that for tomorrow [Monday] and possibly Tuesday, we will not be going to school. The contact hours will be missed, and recouping the lost hours will be difficult,” he said.

The violence has prompted President John Dramani Mahama to call for an immediate investigation.

“The government has ordered a full inquiry to determine the circumstances and ensure that any unlawful actions are addressed,” a statement from the Presidency noted.

Additionally, the President instructed AngloGold Ashanti to cover medical expenses for the injured and arrange funerals for those who lost their lives.
