Manchester United has confirmed the appointment of Ruben Amorim as the new head coach of the men’s first team, pending work visa approval.
Amorim, who has signed a contract until June 2027 with an optional additional year, is expected to begin his role on November 11 after completing his obligations with his current club, Sporting CP.
Amorim, regarded as one of Europe’s brightest young coaching talents, has achieved considerable success in Portugal, including two Primeira Liga titles with Sporting CP, ending the club’s 19-year title drought.
His first game with United will be against Ipswich on November 24, following the international break, and his Old Trafford debut will take place against Bodo/Glimt in the Europa League on November 28.

Ruud van Nistelrooy will serve as interim manager until Amorim’s arrival, following Erik ten Hag’s departure from the club. Ten Hag, who took charge in April 2022, led United to the Carabao Cup and FA Cup but departed after a recent loss to West Ham. The club will announce Amorim’s coaching staff in the coming days.
This comes after Erik ten Hag left his role as Manchester United men’s first-team manager.
Erik was appointed in April 2022 and led the club to two domestic trophies, winning the Carabao Cup in 2023 and the FA Cup in 2024.
During Erik ten Hag’s tenure as manager of Manchester United, the team played a total of 128 matches, achieving 70 wins, 23 draws, and 35 losses, which translates to a win percentage of 55%.
This followed Manchester United’s 2-1 loss against West Ham United at the London Stadium over the weekend.
