Rehabilitation efforts are underway on a bridge near the Spanish town of Torrent, close to Valencia, as workers and heavy machinery clear mud and debris left by recent catastrophic floods.
The bridge, heavily damaged by a surge of muddy water on October 29, was part of the region’s infrastructure severely impacted by the flooding.
The deadly flash floods, which swept through eastern Spain, have resulted in at least 214 fatalities, with dozens still missing. In response, the government has sent an additional 5,000 troops to support ongoing search and clean-up operations, supplementing the 2,500 soldiers already deployed in the affected areas.
According to regional authorities, 211 deaths occurred in Valencia, with further fatalities in Castilla La Mancha and Andalusia, making this Spain’s deadliest flood disaster and Europe’s worst since the 1967 floods in Portugal.
