Police deploy motorbike patrol officers for Ghana’s 2024 polls

The Ghana Police Service has deployed a number of motorbike patrol officers to aid security of today’s polls.

Over 18 million electorates are expected to cast their ballot today for the 12 presidential candidates and the 801 parliamentary candidates.

Prior to today’s elections, special voting exercises took place on Monday in 14 regions and on Wednesday in two other regions, Eastern and Western regions. Over 13,000 special voters cast their ballot and the exercise recorded some electoral malpractice such as vote-buying and display of used ballots.

A total of 40,975 polling stations will be utilised for today’s exercise. Voting starts at 7am and ends at 5pm. Without an Voter’s ID card, one can use his or her Ghana card or go through the biometric verification to cast his or her ballot.

At 9:00 am on 7th December, 2024, the Commission will hold the first media briefing. There will be further briefings at 12:00 noon, 3:00 pm, and 6:00 pm. From 9:00 pm on Election Day, the Commission will provide Media Briefings as and when results are received from the region. Each briefing session will last no more than 30 minutes.

Ahead of the polls, the African Union Commission (AUC) has announced the arrival of its election observation mission (AUEOM) led by H.E. Sahle-Work Zewde, Former President of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia, supported by H.E. Phumzile Mlambo -Ngcuka, Member of the Panel of the Wise and Former Vice President of the Republic of South Africa.

Stakeholders have called for peace and a transparent election. Ghana’s democracy hangs on the balance as authorities seek to avert violence and loss of lives as recorded in the 2020 general elections.
