Several incumbent Members of Parliament and aspiring legislators with the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) have rejected the results of the 2024 parliamentary elections that unseated them.
The Member of Parliament for Okaikwei Central, Patrick Yaw Boamah, who lost to Abdulai Abu Baba Abubakar Sadiq of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has vowed to challenge the outcome in court.
The legislator, speaking to the media, stressed, “I know I have won the election. There is no need for violent means to reclaim my seat. We are consulting with our legal team and gathering the necessary documentation to proceed.”
According to the Electoral Commission, Baba Sadiq secured 15,383 votes, narrowly edging out Boamah, who polled 14,949 votes.
Similarly, the Member of Parliament for Adansi Asokwa, K.T. Hammond, who lost his seat to the NDC candidate, Animli Dorgbadzi Dorani, has refused to concede defeat. Mr. Hammond, who has represented the constituency in Parliament since 2001, garnered 13,275 votes, while Dorani secured 14,229 votes.
He claims his objections are centered around alleged irregularities, particularly regarding the colors of the pink sheets issued by Electoral Commission (EC) officials after the polls.
In another shocking loss, the NPP has lost the Dome Kwabenya seat—a constituency traditionally considered an NPP stronghold—to the NDC. The ruling party’s candidate, Mike Ocquaye Jnr, has rejected the outcome, insisting that the declaration of Faustina Elikplim Akrugu as the winner was flawed due to the destruction of ballot papers and reports about a planned re-collation.
“What the Electoral Commission would use to work has been burnt, and what the NPP will use to work has been burnt. What do you mean? If you know you have won the election, why do you burn ballot papers for the government?” he quizzed.
Furthermore, the NPP candidate for Tema Central, Charles Forson, has condemned as illegitimate the declaration of Ebi Bright as the winner of the parliamentary polls. The EC declared that Ebi Bright secured 18,539 votes against Charles Forson, who garnered 18,421 votes.
Mr. Forson insists that the NPP’s internal analysis of the pink sheets confirms his victory. He has vowed to contest the results in court should the commission fail to declare the recent outcome null and void.
The 2024 general elections have delivered shocking results for the ruling party, which has yet to secure at least 100 seats in the 9th Parliament. Other prominent members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) who have lost their parliamentary seats to the NDC include Communications and Digitization Minister Ursula Owusu-Ekuful in Ablekuma West, Interior Minister Henry Quartey in Ayawaso Central, Fisheries and Aquaculture Minister Hawa Koomson, Tourism Minister Andrew Egyapa Mercer in Sekondi, and Deputy Works and Housing Minister Prince Hamid Armah.
