One arrested amid probe into death of KNUST final year student

A suspect has been arrested in connection with the tragic killing of Miss Joana Deladem Yabani, a final-year Biological Science student at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST).

University authorities confirmed that the suspect, a fellow student residing in the same hostel as the deceased, was apprehended by the Regional Police after a review of CCTV footage. Law enforcement retrieved clothing worn during the crime, which is now being used as evidence in the ongoing investigation.

To ensure the safety of students and prevent further incidents, security on campus has been significantly heightened. Over 50 police officers have been deployed, supported by five mobile patrol teams from the Anti-Robbery Squad and 34 officers from the SWAT Unit in the Ashanti Region. Additional security personnel have been stationed at key locations to enhance surveillance.

KNUST management, working closely with security agencies and the Regional Police Command, has reaffirmed its commitment to student safety. The university disclosed that 80% of the campus is currently covered by CCTV surveillance, including the area where the incident occurred, with plans to extend coverage to the entire university in the near future.

As investigations continue, students have been advised to take extra precautions, including walking in pairs at night, avoiding dark and isolated areas, refraining from carrying valuables at night, and reporting any suspicious activities to authorities immediately.

KNUST has extended its heartfelt condolences to the family of Miss Yabani, expressing deep sorrow over the loss and reassuring students of its dedication to maintaining a secure campus environment.

Meanwhile, the incident has sparked widespread outrage, with many Ghanaians on social media platform X calling for justice. The KNUST community remains in mourning as it awaits further updates on the case.
