The National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) has informed the general public, particularly affected students and stakeholders in the education sector, of the suspension of the demonstration scheduled for Tuesday, 25th February, against the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) over the continued withholding of results.
This decision follows an emergency meeting convened at the instance of the Director-General of the Ghana Education Service (GES), Prof. Emest Kofi Davies with WAEC officials, including Dr. (Mrs.) Rosemond Wilson, Head of WAEC Ghana, Rev. Victor Brew, WAEC Head of Legal, and the NUGS President, Daniel Korley Botchway.
At the meeting. WAEC gave firm assurances that all pending withheld results would be released before 1″ March 2025. In light of this commitment. NUGS has resolved to suspend the planned demonstration while monitoring WAEC’s adherence to the agreed timeline.
Additionally, GES Director General has also invited NUGS to submit policy proposals on reforms regarding the handling of examination malpractice cases. This presents a crucial opportunity for NUGS to advocate for a fairer and more transparent process that prioritizes students’ rights and timely resolutions.
NUGS remains resolute in its mission to protect the interests of Ghanaian students. Should WAEC fail to meet the 28th February deadline, we will not hesitate to take further action in defence of affected students.
“We call on all students, parents, and stakeholders to remain calm as we actively engage WAEC to ensure their commitment is fulfilled. Students and the general public with proposals on how to improve the conduct of exams and handle malpractice should submit same to secretariat@nugs.org.gh,” the statement added.
