MTN confirms cyberattack, says data of over 5,000 Ghanaian customers may be compromised

MTN Group has disclosed that a cybersecurity breach may have compromised the data of approximately 5,700 customers in Ghana, even as its platforms continue to function without disruption.

In a statement dated April 28, the telecom giant said, “We are mindful that our stakeholders may have concerns. While at this early stage of the investigation, we have not been able to ascertain the full extent of the incident, early indications are that about 5,700 MTN Ghana customers’ data may have been affected.”

The company emphasized that it is collaborating with top cybersecurity experts and conducting a forensic investigation to determine the scope and source of the breach. “We will contact the customers involved,” the statement noted, assuring the public that its security protocols are fully engaged.

Although the breach did not affect the availability of MTN’s services, the company urged customers to remain cautious and adopt essential safety practices. These include regularly updating apps and devices, using strong and unique passwords, enabling multifactor authentication, and being alert to suspicious messages or requests for personal information.

To minimize risks of identity theft, MTN advised customers to consider placing fraud alerts on their credit reports through the major credit bureaus.

“The privacy of information is our top priority,” the company assured, adding that it remains committed to protecting the trust and data of its customers.

MTN has pledged to provide regular updates as the investigation progresses. Customers seeking assistance have been encouraged to contact the company via its toll-free support line: 100.
