Minister-nominee for Communications, Digitalisation, and Innovation, Samuel Nartey George, has declared that Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) will cover the cost of a fresh SIM re-registration exercise if he assumes office.
Speaking during his vetting before the Appointments Committee on Thursday, January 30, Mr George criticised the previous registration process, describing it as ineffective and burdensome for citizens. He assured that the new exercise would be seamless, technology-driven, and free for all Ghanaians.
“We will do a proper SIM re-registration again, and this time, there will be no queues because common sense will prevail, and we will use technology to do it,” he said.
He stressed that, unlike the previous government’s approach, which required users to pay through an app, the new registration would be fully funded by MNOs.
“Unlike the immediate past government where people had to pay by using an app, no Ghanaian will have to pay for it, and the cost will be borne by the MNOs,” he stated.
Mr George noted that the re-registration would help enhance security, reduce fraud, and improve telecommunications services across the country. He assured the Committee that, if approved, his leadership would prioritise efficiency and digital transformation in the sector.
