Marcelo, one of the most iconic left-backs in football history, has officially announced his retirement from professional football.
In response, Real Madrid C.F. has paid tribute to his remarkable career, expressing deep gratitude for his contributions to the club and world football.
Having joined Real Madrid at just 18 years old in 2006, Marcelo played a pivotal role in shaping one of the most successful eras in the club’s 122-year history. Over 16 seasons, he made 546 appearances and secured 25 trophies, including five UEFA Champions League titles, four Club World Cups, three UEFA Super Cups, six La Liga championships, two Copa del Rey titles, and five Spanish Super Cups.
On an individual level, Marcelo was named in the FIFA FIFPRO World 11 on six occasions, highlighting his status among the world’s elite defenders.
Beyond club football, Marcelo also had a decorated international career with Brazil. He won the 2013 FIFA Confederations Cup and earned a silver medal at the London 2012 Olympic Games, along with a bronze medal at the Beijing 2008 Olympics.
His return to Fluminense F.C. saw him add further accolades, winning the Copa Libertadores and Recopa Sudamericana.
Marcelo leaves behind an enduring legacy at Real Madrid. He is the third-highest foreign appearance maker for the club, a key player in securing ‘La Décima’ in Lisbon, and the captain who lifted ‘La Decimocuarta’ in Paris. His exceptional skill, commitment, and embodiment of Real Madrid’s values have cemented his place in the hearts of fans worldwide.
Real Madrid President Florentino Pérez hailed Marcelo’s legacy, stating:
“One of the greatest left-backs in Real Madrid and world football history, and we had the privilege of watching him for a long time. He is one of our greatest legends and Real Madrid is and always will be his home.”
As Marcelo embarks on a new chapter in his life, Real Madrid extends its best wishes to him and his family, honoring his remarkable contributions to the sport.
