Former Member of Parliament for Assin Central Kennedy Agyapong has launched a stunning religious attack against former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.
At a meeting with a group of legal professionals in Kumasi to solicit their support for his second bid to become the next NPP flagbearer ahead of the 2028 general elections, Kennedy Agyapong said the NPP should not retain Dr. Bawumia because the party lost the election because of his Islamic religious status.
According to Kennedy Agyapong, Bawumia’s religious status greatly affected the NPP because a number of Christian leaders who he said did not want a Muslim to become president campaigned against Dr. Bawumia.
He said these Christian leaders urged their members not to vote for a Muslim.
The former legislator suggested to his audience that as long as Dr. Bawumia is a Muslim and he’s elected again by the NPP, the problem will persist.
At the end of the meeting, a number of those invited dismissed Kennedy Agyapong’s claims, completely dismissing it as “baseless and divisive.”
Some also said available data across the country does not support the religious slant and attacks by Kennedy Agyapong.
In the 2024 elections, President John Dramani Mahama of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) was declared the winner after securing 56.55% of the votes, while his main opponent, Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia of the NPP, received 41.61%. The NPP also suffered significant losses in Parliament, with the NDC gaining the majority.
The NPP’s General Secretary, Justin Kodua Frimpong, has urged party members and sympathizers to refrain from publicly discussing internal challenges, especially in the wake of their heavy defeat to the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the 2024 elections.
In a statement issued on March 20, Mr. Kodua referenced Article 10(7)(5) of the party’s constitution, which underscores the importance of unity and discipline. He called on members to “immediately cease discussing party issues that create unrest, negativism, and disaffection in the media and other related platforms.”
