Ken Ofori Atta is a fugitive – OSP declares

The Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) has declared former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta a fugitive after failing to appear for interrogation in an ongoing corruption-related investigation.

Speaking at a press conference today, the Special Prosecutor accused Ofori-Atta of causing financial loss to the state through several transactions, including:

  • The contractual arrangement between Strategic Mobilisation Ghana Limited and the Ghana Revenue Authority for revenue assurance in the petroleum and mineral sectors.
  • The termination of a contract between the Electricity Company of Ghana Limited and Beijing Xhao Chen Technology BXC for network improvement.
  • The procurement processes and payments related to the National Cathedral project.
  • Payments and procurement linked to a contract initially handled by the Ministry for Special Development Initiative for servicing and maintenance of 307 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter ambulances for the National Ambulance Service.
  • Payments made from the Ghana Revenue Authority’s tax refund account.

The declaration follows an incident on Tuesday afternoon when a group of individuals, including some in military and police uniforms, reportedly stormed the residence of the former finance minister at Cantonments.

According to sources, about 12 individuals—five in military uniforms, one in a police uniform, and the rest in plain clothes—were seen at the residence. While Ofori-Atta was reportedly out of the country, some family members, including his wife, were present at the time.

The OSP, however, has distanced itself from the raid, stating that it was not responsible for the operation.

“Mr. Ofori-Atta, the OSP did not raid your house on Tuesday, 11th February 2025, or on any other day. Mr. Ofori-Atta, the OSP did not cause any persons, however, uniformed or bedecked, to raid your house on Tuesday, 11th February 2025, or on any other day. Mr. Ofori-Atta, that could not have been the OSP, and that is not our style,” the OSP said.
