Highlights of 2024 African Military Games

Four days into the 2024 African Military Games, Nigeria is dominating the medal table with an impressive haul of 15 medals. Athletes from military establishments across Africa are competing in nearly 20 sports, including athletics, football, basketball, golf, judo, shooting, volleyball, cycling, handball, and boxing.

Nigeria’s Armed Forces have been particularly successful in wrestling, securing five gold medals in women’s wrestling, six silver medals in men’s Greco-Roman wrestling, and four bronze medals in the same category. Adding to their achievements, Nigeria claimed two gold medals in handball after defeating Ghana in both the men’s and women’s finals.

In men’s football, Nigeria faced a narrow 1-0 defeat to Cameroon, while Algeria bested Equatorial Guinea 2-0 in another match.

The taekwondo competition has been intense:

  • Senegal triumphed over Libya in the opening men’s fight.
  • Cameroon edged out Nigeria in the second fight.
  • Tunisia defeated Senegal in the third match, while Algeria secured a victory over Senegal in the fourth.
    In the women’s taekwondo category, Nigeria’s Rejoice claimed a gold medal via a walkover.

Boxing has also delivered thrilling performances. Caroline Linus of Nigeria (Blue) defeated Veronica Mbithe of Kenya (Red) in the women’s boxing final. Meanwhile, Ghana clinched victory over Nigeria in the men’s boxing final.

Kenya’s Gur Meshack Babu has emerged as the winner of the men’s 100m finals in a time of 10:57 seconds.

Ghana’s Shuaibu Marizuk finished second in a time of 10:59 seconds, while Jeovany Ramos Andrade of Cape Verde finished third in a time of 10.67 seconds.

In the women’s final, Kate Agyeman of Ghana took first place in 11.50 seconds, with Mary Boakye closely behind with 11.50, while Loice Morara of Kenya clocked 12.00 seconds.

Nigerian Aniebiet John finished fourth in 12.30 seconds.

Kenya’s Gur Meshack Babu has emerged winner of the Men’s 100m Finals.

This year’s games offer an exceptional platform for Africa’s armed forces to showcase their skills, foster camaraderie, and strengthen military cooperation. The event, which kicked off with great enthusiasm, is slated to conclude on November 30.
