The Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana has announced that the official results of the 2024 presidential elections will be declared today at 4:30pm.
This was revealed by Samuel Tettey, Deputy Chairman of Operations at the EC, during an update on the collation process.
Mr. Tettey stated that results from 13 regions have been collated so far, and urged political party supporters to refrain from gathering at the national collation centre, describing such actions as “illegal and unwarranted.”
“If you don’t have accreditation to the national collation centre, please don’t come to the national collation centre,” Mr. Tettey cautioned.
Ahead of the official declaration, provisional results indicate that John Dramani Mahama, flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has emerged victorious in the 2024 presidential elections. This would make Mahama the first leader in Ghana’s Fourth Republic to return to office after serving a previous term.
Millions of Ghanaians participated in the polls on Saturday, December 7, to elect the country’s 8th President and members of the 9th Parliament, who will assume office on January 7, 2025.
Prior to the EC’s official announcement, Vice President and New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, conceded defeat. Addressing the media on Sunday, Dr. Bawumia disclosed that his party’s internal collation confirmed a decisive victory for Mahama and the NDC.
“Ladies and gentlemen of the media, following yesterday’s presidential and parliamentary elections, Ghanaians at home and abroad have been sitting on tenterhooks awaiting the outcome. Let me say that data from our own internal collation of the election results indicates that former President H.E. John Dramani Mahama has won the presidential election decisively,” Dr. Bawumia stated.
He further acknowledged the NDC’s parliamentary victory, while awaiting final results for a few outstanding seats. “The NDC has also won the parliamentary election, even though we await final collation for a number of seats. However, I believe ultimately this will not change the overall outcome. I have just called H.E. John Dramani Mahama to congratulate him as the President-elect of the Republic of Ghana,” he revealed.
Dr. Bawumia expressed his respect for the decision of the Ghanaian people and called for calm amidst growing tensions. “I will respect the decision of Ghanaians,” he assured.
In a Facebook post following the provisional results, John Dramani Mahama expressed gratitude to the nation, writing, “Thank you, Ghana.”
Meanwhile, the EC’s official declaration of the final certified results remains highly anticipated, with early projections also indicating a parliamentary majority for the NDC.
Dr. Bawumia extended his gratitude to NPP supporters for their commitment and pledged his support to Mahama in working towards national development over the next four years.
