Energy Minister vows punitive action as over 1,300 ECG containers go missing

The Attorney General’s Department and the Police will lead efforts to track down those responsible for the disappearance of over 1,300 containers belonging to the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), Energy Minister John Abdulai Jinapor has announced.

His statement follows the submission of a 103-page investigative report by a committee set up on January 30, 2025, to probe procurement irregularities and the prolonged detention of ECG’s equipment at the Tema Port. The findings, according to the Minister, are alarming, with serious procurement breaches uncovered and approximately 1,350 containers unaccounted for.

“The over 1,300 containers cannot vanish into thin air. We will work with the AG’s Department and the Police to ensure that those responsible for the missing containers are brought to book to retrieve the containers or the monetary value of the same,” Hon. Jinapor stated.

He further announced that ECG’s procurement unit would be restructured within a week as part of broader reforms to tighten oversight and prevent further lapses.

“It cannot be business as usual. We are not targeting anybody, but we will make sure whoever is responsible will be held liable,” he stressed.

Hon. Jinapor commended the committee, chaired by Prof. Innocent Senyo Acquah, for its meticulous work in bringing the issue to light. He reaffirmed his commitment to ensuring accountability and strengthening procurement processes within ECG to prevent future financial losses.
