Death of NDC supporter at Awutu Senya East brings electoral death toll to 2

A shooting incident in the Awutu Senya East constituency of the Central Region has left one person dead and another critically injured during Saturday’s polls.

The victims, supporters of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), were attacked by unknown assailants who opened fire on their vehicle.

According to reports, the incident occurred shortly after the NDC Parliamentary Candidate, Phyllis Naa Koryoo Okunor, allegedly declared herself the winner of the parliamentary elections.

The attackers, believed to have followed her team after they observed the vote counting and collation process, ambushed and opened fire as the group was heading home.

The Ghana Police Service has since confirmed that the victims were supporters of Phyllis Naa Koryoo Okunor. In connection with the violence, four individuals have been arrested at Awutu Senya East for wielding weapons. A video circulating online shows the suspects in handcuffs being escorted to a police station.

Awutu Senya East, a known electoral hotspot, has witnessed similar incidents of violence during past elections.

This latest tragedy brings the electoral death toll to two, following a similar shooting in the Tolon Constituency of the Northern Region, where one person was killed. The Police in that case have also arrested four suspects as investigations continue.

Security agencies are working to ensure calm and order in affected areas as the electoral process concludes.
