Citizens of Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger to enjoy visa-free movement despite withdrawal from ECOWAS

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has announced that despite the official withdrawal of Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger from the regional bloc on January 29, citizens of these countries will still enjoy visa-free movement across ECOWAS member states.

In a statement, the regional body emphasized that in the spirit of solidarity and in consideration of the well-being of the people, arrangements have been made to ensure minimal disruptions during this transition period.

To this end, ECOWAS has directed all relevant authorities within and outside its member states to recognize national passports and identity cards bearing the ECOWAS logo for citizens of Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger until further notice. Additionally, goods and services originating from the three nations will continue to receive preferential treatment under the ECOWAS Trade Liberalization Scheme (ETLS) and investment policy.

The directive further assures that citizens from the affected countries will retain their rights to visa-free movement, residence, and establishment within ECOWAS territories, in line with existing protocols. Furthermore, ECOWAS officials from Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger will be granted full support and cooperation as they carry out assignments for the regional body.

These temporary measures will remain in effect while ECOWAS leaders determine the future engagement framework with the three countries. To facilitate this process, the Commission has established a structure for dialogue with each of the withdrawing nations.
