Twenty-two pupils from two basic schools in Prampram who fell ill after reportedly consuming a locally made drink, asana, have received medical attention, with 21 discharged and one still under observation.
The students, from Prampram D/A Basic ‘B’ and Methodist Freeman Basic School, collapsed during school hours on Monday, April 14, prompting a swift emergency response. Eyewitnesses recounted scenes of panic as several children were seen running frantically before collapsing.
Providing an update on the incident, Member of Parliament for Ningo-Prampram, Sam Nartey George, said he engaged the Education Directorate and the Medical Director of the Prampram Polyclinic after learning of the “disturbing news.”
In a post shared on X, he wrote, “A total of 22 children were affected and treated with 21 discharged for further observation and 1 child admitted overnight as a precautionary measure.”
He further confirmed that the vendor of the suspected contaminated drink is cooperating with authorities, and samples have been sent to the lab to determine what went wrong.
“I wish the children speedy recovery and thank the hospital for their speedy intervention,” he added, commending the polyclinic staff for their professionalism.
