Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, Ghana’s Minister-designate for Foreign Affairs, has taken steps to consult with seasoned diplomats as he prepares to assume his new role. On Saturday, he visited Dr. Obed Yao Asamoah, Ghana’s longest-serving Foreign Minister, for guidance and inspiration.
In a heartfelt Facebook post, Mr. Ablakwa described his encounter with the 89-year-old statesman as an invaluable learning experience.
“I am extremely grateful to the extraordinary statesman and member of the NDC’s Council of Elders for receiving me in his home today; for his kind encouragement; for his blessings; for his generous insights; and for his perspectives, which was a masterclass,” he wrote.

Dr. Asamoah, who served as Foreign Minister from 1981 to 1997 under former President Jerry John Rawlings, also held the unique distinction of concurrently serving as Attorney-General and Minister of Justice. During the visit, Dr. Asamoah expressed confidence in President John Mahama’s foreign policy vision and encouraged Mr. Ablakwa to approach the role with dedication and patriotism.
The Member of Parliament for North Tongu seized the opportunity to express his appreciation for the sacrifices made by Ghana’s elder statesmen. “God bless all our outstanding patriots for paving the way for the younger generation,” he added.
Mr. Ablakwa, a four-term legislator with a public service career spanning two decades, has built a reputation for ethical and transformational leadership. As the former Ranking Member of the Select Committee on Foreign Affairs, he brings significant expertise to his new portfolio. He also chairs Operation Recover All Loot (ORAL), President Mahama’s flagship anti-corruption initiative.
In his statement, Mr. Ablakwa pledged to uphold Ghana’s interests with diligence and innovation while thanking his family, constituents, and supporters for their unwavering encouragement. “I won’t let you down,” he assured.
