The Ghana Police Service has firmly denied reports that Inspector General of Police, Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, has been asked to proceed on leave, with his responsibilities to be handed over to his deputy, Christian Tetteh Yohuno.
In a press release dated June 30, the Police Service labeled the claims as “fake news” and urged the public to dismiss them with the contempt they deserve.
“The Inspector-General of Police remains committed to his patriotic duty of leading the Ghana Police Service as per the mandate given him by the President of the Republic, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo,” the statement read.
The false report, published by Daily Guide on June 30, 2024, suggested that Dampare’s supposed removal was connected to the 2023 leaked tape scandal investigated by a parliamentary committee chaired by Samuel Atta Akyea, MP for Abuakwa South.
Additional sources had speculated that allegations of insubordination were behind the rumored dismissal of Dampare.
In the meantime, the parliamentary committee investigating the leaked tape, which implicated senior police officers in a plot to oust IGP Dampare, has concluded its inquiry.
The committee recommended disciplinary action against three officers: COP Alex George Mensah, Supt. George Lysander Asare, and Supt. Emmanuel Eric Gyedi.
The investigation found these officers had violated police regulations and professional conduct codes by engaging in activities that could entangle them in political disputes or lead to the misuse of their positions.
The committee has advised Parliament to inform President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo of these findings, in accordance with Section 19 of the Police Service Act, 1970 (Act 350), which authorizes the president to enforce disciplinary measures.
The President’s decision is now awaited to address the breach of trust and protocol within the police service ranks.
