Renowned American rapper Travis Scott was detained in Miami on Thursday following an argument on a boat. Official records indicate that the 33-year-old artist, whose real name is Jacques Bermon Webster, was arrested by Miami Beach Police at approximately 01:45 local time at Miami Beach Marina.
According to an arrest report obtained by BBC Newsbeat, officers were summoned to the marina in response to reports of an altercation on a yacht. Upon arrival, police observed Scott engaged in a heated exchange with individuals aboard the vessel.
Officers noted a strong odour of alcohol on his breath and advised him to leave the dock, which he initially did. However, Scott reportedly returned shortly thereafter, yelling obscenities and behaving erratically.
Police documents detail that Scott ignored officers’ commands and continued to cause a disturbance, leading to his arrest on suspicion of disorderly intoxication and trespassing. Following the incident, Scott admitted to having consumed alcohol, commenting, “It’s Miami.”
Bradford Cohen, Scott’s legal representative, issued a statement clarifying the situation. “Mr. Scott was briefly detained due to a misunderstanding,” Cohen said.
“There was absolutely no physical altercation involved, and we thank the authorities for working with us towards a swift and amicable resolution.”
Travis Scott, a ten-time Grammy Award nominee, is among the most prominent figures in the hip-hop industry. He shares two children with reality star Kylie Jenner. Scott’s European tour is set to begin in the Netherlands on June 28, with performances in London and Manchester scheduled for July 13.
This incident adds to the controversies surrounding the rapper, who faced significant backlash following the tragic deaths of 10 fans at his Astroworld festival in Houston, Texas, in 2021. While Scott did not face criminal charges related to the fatalities, he remains involved in ongoing civil litigation against the festival organizers.
Scott’s latest album, “Utopia,” debuted at number one in the UK last year, shortly after the cancellation of a highly anticipated concert in front of Egypt’s pyramids. Despite the recent arrest, fans remain eager for his upcoming European performances.
