Portugal started their Euro 2024 campaign with a hard-fought victory over Czech Republic, thanks to Francisco Conceicao’s late winner in Leipzig.
Despite dominating possession, Roberto Martinez’s side found themselves trailing after Lukas Provod’s stunning strike for the Czechs.
However, a stroke of misfortune for Czech Republic, as goalkeeper Jindrich Stanek’s parry off Nuno Mendes’ header ricocheted off Robin Hranac into the net, leveled the score.
The win was sealed in stoppage time when Conceicao found the back of the net.
Portugal, led by captain Cristiano Ronaldo in his record sixth European Championship appearance, were expected to perform well after an impressive qualifying campaign.

They controlled the game but struggled to convert their dominance into clear chances. Ronaldo had two good opportunities in the first half but was denied by Stanek.
The Czech Republic, under Ivan Hasek, defended resolutely and took the lead against the run of play through Provod’s strike. Despite their efforts, they were unable to hold on for a point as Portugal’s pressure eventually paid off.
The victory will boost Portugal’s confidence as they look to build on their Euro 2016 triumph. Meanwhile, the Czech Republic will take heart from their performance and look to bounce back in their upcoming matches against Turkey and Georgia.
