A number of communities in Accra are currently experiencing an interruption in water supply due to a temporary shutdown of the Weija Treatment Plant by Ghana Water Limited (GWL).
According to GWL, the shutdown is necessary to enable its engineers to carry out critical repairs on main transmission pipelines that serve the western part of the capital.
Areas impacted by the disruption include Korle-Bu, Mamprobi, Dansoman, Weija (parts), Gbawe, Malam, Anyaa, Kwashieman, Ablekuma, and Darkuman. Other communities such as Odorkor, Tesano, Sowutuom, Lapaz, Kaneshie, parts of Achimota, the North Industrial Area, and neighbouring areas are also affected.
The maintenance work began at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, July 2, and is expected to be completed by 5:00 p.m. the same day.
GWL has assured residents that efforts are underway to complete the works within the scheduled time. “Our engineers are on site working hard to ensure that the work is completed on schedule,” management noted in a statement.
The company also issued an apology to affected households and businesses for the inconvenience the disruption has caused.
While GWL urged residents and businesses in the affected areas to seek alternative water sources during the period, it remains unclear if the shutdown notice—dated July 2—reached residents early enough to prepare adequately.
For households that may have received the information late, the challenge of securing water, especially amid financial limitations, could be more difficult. Without sufficient preparation, many homes and commercial establishments risk facing operational difficulties due to the interruption in water supply.
