Nigerian socialite and businessman Cubana Chief Priest has been charged with abusing banknotes, joining a list of local celebrities facing similar charges.
Born Pascal Okechukwu, he pleaded not guilty to three counts of abusing banknotes during a court appearance on Wednesday.
Authorities allege that Cubana Chief Priest threw money into the air at various social events, a practice known as “spraying,” commonly done at Nigerian weddings and celebrations. While the act is intended for guests to pick up the money, it is considered an offence as notes can fall to the ground where they may be trodden on.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Nigeria’s elite anti-crime agency, has been leading a drive against “all forms of naira abuse,” including spraying money.
Just a fortnight ago, popular internet personality Bobrisky was sentenced to six months in prison for a similar offence. In February, actress Oluwadarasimi Omoseyin also received a six-month prison sentence for spraying and stepping on new naira notes.
