24-hour security at Flower Pot Interchange to deter hawkers begging for alternative space to sell

The government has deployed 24-hour security at the Flower Pot Interchange to prevent hawkers from returning to the site, sparking calls from displaced vendors for an alternative space to conduct their business.

The directive follows the commissioning of the interchange, after which hawkers were barred from setting up structures in the area. Despite the ban, some vendors attempted to resume trading at the location, prompting Greater Accra Regional Minister Titus Glover to personally demolish makeshift stalls.

Hawkers, however, have expressed frustration, accusing authorities of failing to deliver on promises to allocate a designated selling area upon the project’s completion.

Sandra Korkor, one of the affected vendors, lamented, “The workers directed us to sell beneath the overhead, prompting us to take out loans to enhance our businesses. We were optimistic during the inauguration, proudly wearing NPP t-shirts and attending to show our support, believing that a designated selling area would be allocated to us in exchange for our votes for Bawumia. However, we were unexpectedly instructed to vacate the premises. This situation is unjust, as we are now unable to repay our loans without a designated selling location.”

Another hawker, Selassie Nkansah, pleaded for a solution, stating, “We acknowledge the project, but we’re pleading to them to get us a place to sell. I have a responsibility of paying my children’s school fees.”

Meanwhile, Titus Glover has tasked the Ledzokuku Municipal Assembly with ensuring round-the-clock security at the interchange. He added that the government is considering extending the fencing around the structure to permanently deter hawkers from returning.
