Coconut seller defies container setup ban; fixes stand at Flower Pot Interchange

A coconut seller, Sahadatu Seidu, has defied the government’s directive banning the setup of kiosks and containers near the newly commissioned Flower Pot Interchange in Accra, becoming the first to resume business under the flyover barely 24 hours after the order was issued.

Speaking to *Citi News*, Sahadatu revealed that she had simply “returned to her old spot,” despite the explicit ban reiterated by Greater Accra Regional Minister Titus Glover during the interchange’s inauguration. Glover had called on Municipal Assemblies to enforce the directive, ensuring the area remains clean and organized.

“We share the responsibility to maintain and use these resources wisely. In this light, I will like to urge the Municipal Assemblies, particularly the Ledzokuku and Ayawaso West Wuogon under whose jurisdiction this interchange falls, to ensure that this area is kept clean. Additionally, I don’t want to see kiosks. We don’t want to see kiosks, containers littered all over here,” he emphasized.

Inaugurated on November 19 by President Nana Akufo-Addo, the Flower Pot Interchange is a modern infrastructure project designed to ease traffic congestion along the Spintex Road, one of Accra’s busiest corridors. Featuring a flyover and underpass, the interchange connects key areas like East Legon, Madina, Teshie, and Spintex, enhancing mobility and fostering economic growth.

President Akufo-Addo described the project as a “legacy for the future,” underscoring his government’s commitment to transformative infrastructure development.

“This moment is not merely about the opening of a new piece of infrastructure; it is about unveiling a vision for Ghana’s future, one driven by lasting progress, inclusivity, and national pride,” he said.

The President also reflected on his administration’s achievements since 2017, emphasizing the critical role of roads in national development. “Roads are pathways to opportunity, prosperity, and a better quality of life for all,” he added.

The ban on kiosks and containers around the interchange is part of efforts to maintain its aesthetic appeal and functionality. The defiance by Sahadatu raises concerns about the enforcement of such directives, highlighting the challenges of balancing urban development with livelihoods.
