Ugandan legislators trade blows in Parliament, one hospitalised; Speaker suspends 12

Ugandan legislators clashed in Parliament on Wednesday, November 6, 2024, with one MP hospitalized and 12 others suspended by Speaker Anita Among following a heated altercation.

The confrontation erupted when Francis Zaake (Mityana Municipality, NUP) aggressively confronted Anthony Akol (Kilak North, FDC), shoving him from his seat near the Speaker. Akol retaliated by striking Zaake in the head before the two were separated.

The brawl came after a tense exchange regarding heightened security checks at Parliament, which some MPs, including Ibrahim Semujju Nganda (Kira Municipality, FDC), had criticized. Zaake further alleged that a security operative was armed in the chamber, sparking additional unrest. Following a search ordered by the Speaker, no weapon was found, but chaos ensued, leading to a temporary adjournment. Zaake was later taken to the hospital in an ambulance.
