Ghanaians tear into Akufo-Addo over new sculpture to honour him

Some Ghanaians have expressed their displeasure on the X platform over the unveiling of a statue to honour outgoing President Nana Akufo-Addo.

The statue, which was revealed on Wednesday, November 6, at the entrance of Effia-Nkwanta Regional Hospital in Sekondi, is part of Akufo-Addo’s one-day “thank you” tour of the Western Region.

Western Regional Minister, Kwabena Okyere Darko Mensah, stated that the statue celebrates the President’s contributions to the region, highlighting key projects such as the rehabilitation of Effia-Nkwanta Regional Hospital, the construction of a three-tier Sinohydro interchange, and the redevelopment of Takoradi Market Circleβ€”all of which remain incomplete.

The unveiling of the statue has sparked criticism, with many pointing to Ghana’s ongoing economic struggles under Akufo-Addo’s leadership. Critics have highlighted rising inflation, high public debt, increased cost of living, and unfulfilled development promises. Some X users have even likened the President to Nebuchadnezzar, referencing the biblical king who erected a giant gold statue, drawing a parallel between the costly monument and the country’s economic challenges.
