Eight travellers were killed by armed gunmen in a deadly attack near Gbimsi, a community close to Walewale last Sunday, intensifying security concerns linked to the ongoing conflict in Bawku.
The Ghana Police Service and the Ghana Armed Forces have assured the public that they are actively working to restore calm and ensure security in Bawku and its surrounding areas, as well as along the Bolgatanga – Walewale – Tamale highway.
In response to the violence, joint Police and Military deployments have been stationed in Bawku and are patrolling key routes, including the Bolgatanga-Walewale-Tamale highway, to maintain order and manage traffic.
The attack involved gunmen setting up roadblocks in Gbimsi and Walewale, stopping vehicles and interrogating passengers to identify specific targets. Two vehicles were set on fire during the assault.
A survivor shared his frightening experience: “I was traveling from Sunyani to Paga. Upon reaching Walewale, people had mounted roadblocks and were searching for individuals to kill. The incident lasted for more than an hour, yet security did not respond.”
Authorities believe the incident is linked to the ongoing conflict in Bawku, which has seen a recent resurgence after a period of relative calm. Security agencies have reaffirmed their commitment to restoring peace, law, and order in the affected regions.
