Joana Gyan Cudjoe, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary candidate for the Amenfi Central Constituency, has been disqualified from contesting in the 2024 elections by the Electoral Commission (EC).
This follows an order from the Sekondi High Court, which issued an Interlocutory Injunction on May 31, 2024, in a case brought against her by Gyedu Frimpong and four others.
The court order restrains Gyan Cudjoe from presenting herself as the NDC’s legitimate parliamentary candidate for Amenfi Central. The injunction also bars the NDC and the Electoral Commission from recognizing or dealing with her in any official capacity as a candidate until the case is resolved.
In a letter addressed to Joana Gyan and signed by Samuel Tettey, the EC’s Deputy Chairman of Operations, the Commission stated that it is bound by the court’s ruling and has no option but to disqualify her from the parliamentary race.
The lawsuit, titled *Gyedu Frimpong & 4 Others v. Joana Gyan Cudjoe, the NDC & the Electoral Commission* (Suit No. E12/36/24), has raised legal questions over her candidacy. With the court order still in place, Gyan Cudjoe’s disqualification will stand until a final judgment is issued in the case.
The ruling is a setback for the NDC in the Amenfi Central Constituency, as they now face legal and political hurdles in the lead-up to the 2024 general elections.
