The National Peace Council of Ghana has issued a plea for enhanced financial support as it gears up for its crucial role in ensuring peaceful and orderly elections in 2024.
Reverend Dr Adu Gyamfi, Chairman of the Council, underscored the urgent need for additional resources to effectively manage the upcoming electoral activities.
Dr Gyamfi emphasized that the current workload faced by the Peace Council has stretched its resources thin, hindering its ability to carry out essential functions effectively. He highlighted the Council’s pivotal role in mediating conflicts, facilitating dialogue among political parties, and overseeing the electoral process to maintain peace and stability in the country.
“In preparation for the 2024 general elections, the Peace Council requires approximately $1 million to adequately fund election-related activities,” Dr Gyamfi disclosed during a recent statement. He noted that while some donors have offered assistance, more substantial financial backing is necessary to bolster their capacity.
The Chairman pointed out that the demands on the Peace Council have increased significantly, necessitating more funding and additional personnel to meet the growing challenges. He stressed that regional secretaries are currently overwhelmed with their workload and lack necessary support such as drivers to facilitate their operations.
“There is an urgent need for more resources and personnel to effectively carry out our mandate,” Rev. Adu Gyamfi stated during an inter-party dialogue focused on mitigating election violence. He highlighted the critical role of regional offices in maintaining peace at the grassroots level and called for immediate support to strengthen their capabilities.
