In a significant development ahead of the 2024 general elections, the leadership of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) has officially endorsed Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, the current Energy Minister and Manhyia Member of Parliament, as the running mate for their flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.
Dr. Bawumia, the party’s flagbearer, introduced Dr. Prempeh during a meeting with party executives at the Alisa Hotel in Accra. The National Council and National Elections Committee were present to formally accept the nomination.
NPP General Secretary Justin Frimpong Kodua (JFK) expressed the party’s satisfaction with the choice, emphasizing Dr. Prempeh’s notable achievements, particularly his role in implementing the Free Senior High School Policy during President Akufo-Addo’s first term. Kodua also highlighted the stability of power supply under Dr. Prempeh’s tenure as Energy Minister.
“So, ladies and gentlemen, if you were to ask me what Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh brings onboard to the NPP presidential ticket, I will say he brings to us a bold, confident, hardworking, result-driven, decisive, grassroots mobiliser, charismatic, patriotic, and demonstrable incorruptible person,” Kodua stated.
The selection process saw several prominent figures in the running, including Chief of Staff Frema Osei-Opare, Agriculture Minister Bryan Acheampong, and Education Minister Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum. Each of these individuals was considered a strong contender for the position, with their supporters actively lobbying for their nomination.
Dr. Prempeh’s nomination marks a decisive moment for the NPP as they gear up for the upcoming elections. His background in both education and energy sectors is seen as a strategic advantage for the party’s campaign.
As the NPP moves forward with their newly solidified ticket, the party’s leadership and supporters are expected to rally behind Dr. Bawumia and Dr. Prempeh, focusing on their shared vision and commitment to Ghana’s progress.
With the 2024 general elections on the horizon, the NPP’s choice of Dr. Prempeh as running mate sets the stage for a competitive and dynamic political landscape.
