The Concerned National Service Scheme (NSS) Personnel Association of Ghana (CONSPAG) has launched a nationwide strike effective today, Wednesday, July 3, 2024, to protest the non-payment of overdue allowances by the government.
In a strongly worded statement dated July 2, 2024, CONSPAG addressed all NSS personnel, user agencies, and stakeholders, detailing the reasons behind their decision to embark on the strike.
The association highlighted significant challenges faced by NSS personnel, including severe difficulties in covering accommodation and utility bills, transportation costs to their respective work placements, and meeting basic sustenance needs at their workplaces.
According to CONSPAG, the prolonged delay in the payment of allowances has forced many personnel to borrow money for survival, leading to financial strain and health issues among the affected individuals.
“We are entitled to our monthly allowance as we render mandatory service to the state. As of now, the government owes trainees five months’ allowance and graduates from the Universities three months,” the statement emphasized.
The association also pointed out that under NSS regulations, personnel who fail to report to their assigned posts for three months face sanctions. Despite their commitment to duty, personnel have endured working conditions without the necessary financial support for several months.
The strike action by CONSPAG underscores the urgency of addressing the financial hardships faced by NSS personnel, who play a crucial role in various sectors across the country.
As the strike begins, NSS personnel await a response from the government, hoping for a swift resolution to their demands for the payment of overdue allowances to alleviate their current hardships.
