The football world is mourning the loss of former Cameroon international and Celtic midfielder, Landry Nguemo, who died in a car accident in Cameroon.
The 38-year-old’s untimely passing was confirmed by Cameroon’s football authorities today.
Nguemo’s career began with French side Nancy and saw him play in various leagues, including stints in Turkey and Norway. He spent the 2009-10 season on loan at Celtic, where he became a vital part of the squad under managers Tony Mowbray and Neil Lennon.
During his time at Parkhead, Nguemo made his competitive debut in a Champions League qualifying match against Dynamo Moscow and went on to make over 40 appearances for the club.
Nguemo was a significant player for the Cameroonian national team, the Indomitable Lions, from 2006 to 2014. His contributions to the team and his clubs, including Girondins de Bordeaux, earned him a respected place in the football community.
The Cameroonian Football Federation (FECAFOOT) expressed its sorrow in an official statement:
“The Cameroonian Football Federation has just learned the tragic news of the passing of former Indomitable Lion Landry Nguemo in a traffic accident. Nguemo, who was a key player for the Cameroonian national team from 2006 to 2014 and a former member of Girondins de Bordeaux, will be remembered for his contributions to football. FECAFOOT extends its deepest condolences to his family, friends, and the entire football community.”
Celtic Football Club also paid tribute to their former player on their official website.
“Everyone at Celtic Football Club is shocked and saddened at the news of Landry N’Guemo’s passing at the young age of 38. The thoughts and prayers of everyone at Celtic Football Club are with Landry’s family and friends at this sad time,” read the statement.
