Former Juventus and AC Milan footballer Roberto Baggio has been injured in an armed robbery at his home in northern Italy.
The incident occurred at his villa in Altavilla Vicentina, where at least five individuals broke in around 22:00 local time (21:00 BST), according to local media reports.
The 57-year-old football veteran was taken to an emergency room in Arzignano, where he received stitches to his forehead after being hit with a gun by one of the burglars.
In his first public statement since the incident, Baggio expressed gratitude for the well-wishes he has received, stating: “Now all that remains is to overcome the fear.”
Fortunately, Baggio’s injuries were limited to a few stitches, bruises, and emotional distress. The violent robbery reportedly occurred while Baggio and his family were watching the Italy vs Spain match in the European Championships.
Luca Zaia, the president of the Veneto region, expressed hope for Baggio’s swift recovery, describing him as the “symbolic champion of our football and our region.”
Zaia condemned the incident and expressed confidence that the perpetrators would be brought to justice.
During the robbery, Baggio attempted to stop the burglars but was struck on the forehead with a gun. Subsequently, he and his family were locked in a room while the burglars ransacked the house in search of valuables.
The total value of items stolen is currently unknown.
After feeling it was safe to do so, Baggio broke down the door of the room and alerted the police. Authorities are now reviewing CCTV footage of the incident as part of their investigation.
Baggio, known as “Divin Codino” (the divine ponytail) during his illustrious career, led Italy to the World Cup final in 1994. However, he famously missed the decisive penalty in the shootout, allowing Brazil to claim victory.
He went on to play for AC Milan, Inter Milan, and Brescia before retiring in 2004. Baggio remains the only Italian to score at three World Cups and shares the record for most World Cup goals for Italy.
