The ad hoc committee established by Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin to investigate the leaked audio tape discussing the alleged plot to remove Inspector General of Police Dr. George Akuffo Dampare has submitted its report to Parliament.
The committee, chaired by Abuakwa South MP Samuel Atta Akyea, was specifically tasked with delving into the details of the recording where senior police officers were allegedly heard conspiring with Bugri Naabu, former Northern Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
The contentious audio tape, which sparked widespread concern, featured a conversation that allegedly included plans to oust IGP Dampare due to his uncompromising professionalism. The officers involved were purportedly concerned that Dampare’s integrity made him difficult to manipulate.
The committee’s findings were formally presented to Parliament on Tuesday, June 18, with the Clerk of Parliament announcing, “The report of the Special Committee of Inquiry into the contents of a leaked audio tape of a high-ranking police officer and others in an alleged conspiracy to remove the current Inspector General of Police, Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, and related matters has been duly presented.”
The committee’s mandate included examining the authenticity of the audio, identifying the participants, and assessing the potential breach of conduct by the officers involved.
As Parliament reviews the report, the findings will likely inform subsequent actions and recommendations regarding the implicated officers and any broader systemic issues within the police force.
The outcome of this investigation is anticipated to play a crucial role in maintaining public confidence in the leadership of the Ghana Police Service and its commitment to professionalism and impartiality.
