Assin Central Member of Parliament and former contender for the New Patriotic Party’s flagbearership position, Kennedy Agyapong, has extended an apology to his supporters for not informing them prior to joining Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia and his campaign team on the Ashanti Regional campaign tour.
Agyapong, known for his outspoken nature, joined Dr. Bawumia’s campaign team in the Ashanti Region on June 11, ahead of the country’s upcoming polls.
His decision came as a surprise to many, as there was no prior announcement from his camp regarding his involvement in the campaign.
In response to the backlash from some of his supporters, Agyapong clarified his stance during his 64th birthday celebration, asserting that he has not resigned from the NPP and has no intentions of running as an independent candidate.
He emphasized the importance of unity among party members, urging both supporters of Dr. Bawumia and his own supporters to come together ahead of the December elections.
“It didn’t go well with some of you. Let me apologise for not informing you before I went there,” Agyapong said, acknowledging the discontent among his supporters.
He further emphasized his commitment to the NPP, stating, “I am not selfish. People have come to me to go independent, but that is not the wise thing to do and therefore I have refused to do that.”
However, Agyapong’s decision to endorse Dr. Bawumia as the NPP flagbearer has not been without criticism. Renowned musician and media personality, Blakk Rasta, openly criticized Agyapong for his endorsement, highlighting unresolved issues between Agyapong and Dr. Bawumia in the past.
Rasta expressed concern that Agyapong’s decision could potentially damage his political career, given the party’s internal dynamics. He condemned the advisers who influenced Agyapong’s endorsement, describing it as an ill-advised decision with potentially negative repercussions.
Amidst the differing opinions and criticisms, Agyapong remains firm in his support for Dr. Bawumia and the NPP, emphasizing the need for unity and solidarity within the party as they prepare for the upcoming elections.
