Lionel Messi, the renowned footballer and eight-time Ballon d’Or winner, has expressed his intention to conclude his illustrious career with Inter Miami but has deferred any retirement plans for the time being.
The 36-year-old Argentine, who secured his eighth Ballon d’Or last year, made a move to Major League Soccer (MLS) club Inter Miami in the summer, following his departure from Paris St-Germain.
Messi’s exceptional career with Barcelona, where he clinched the Champions League four times and secured 10 La Liga titles, is well-documented. The 2022 World Cup winner with Argentina is currently under contract with Inter Miami until 2025, with the possibility of extending for an additional year.
“As of today, I think it’s going to be my last club,” Messi disclosed in an interview with ESPN, adding, “I’m not ready to leave football either.”
Despite nearing the twilight of his career, Messi shows no signs of slowing down. This season, he has registered 12 goals and 13 assists in 12 matches for the MLS leaders. His remarkable form bodes well for Argentina as they aim to defend their Copa America title later this month.
Reflecting on his move to the United States, Messi acknowledged the difficulty in departing from Europe but highlighted that being a world champion has provided a different perspective. “I love playing football. I enjoy the training, every day of the matches,” Messi remarked, emphasizing his reluctance for his football journey to end.
“I enjoy everything much more, because I’m aware that there’s less and less to go and I have a good time at the club,” Messi added. “I enjoy the little details that I know I’m going to miss when I don’t play anymore.”
Messi’s commitment to Inter Miami and his passion for the game continue to inspire fans worldwide as he aims to make the most of his remaining playing days.
