Chelsea striker Sam Kerr has signed a two-year contract extension with the club, ensuring her stay until at least 2026.
The 30-year-old Australian captain, whose contract was set to expire this summer, has had an impressive run since joining Chelsea from the Chicago Red Stars in 2019, scoring 99 goals in 128 matches.
Kerr’s tenure at Chelsea has been marked by significant achievements, including five consecutive Women’s Super League titles, three FA Cups, two League Cups, and a Community Shield.
She has also won the Golden Boot twice and was the runner-up to Spain’s Aitana Bonmati at the Ballon d’Or awards last year.
Chelsea initially created a stir on Thursday morning by publishing a video in which Kerr hinted at her departure. However, this was quickly followed by another video just 20 minutes later, announcing her contract extension.
“It’s really exciting and a very proud moment for me,” Kerr said after signing the new deal. “Having the opportunity to stay at a club like Chelsea means a lot to me. I’m really excited to continue to push and to try to win trophies.”
Kerr has not played since January due to an anterior cruciate ligament injury, which also rules her out of the Australia squad for this summer’s Olympics in Paris. Despite this setback, she remains Australia’s record scorer and one of the nation’s most celebrated sports figures.
In a more challenging personal development, Kerr pleaded not guilty in March to charges of racially aggravated harassment of a London police officer. She is scheduled to appear in court on February 1, 2025.
