The opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has strongly criticized the Ghana Police Service for the arrest of Collins Dauda, Member of Parliament for Asutifi South, asserting that it lacks justification.
Mr Dauda has been detained in connection with a recent disruption during the limited voter registration exercise in Kukuom, Ahafo Region, where one individual was injured and hospitalized.
Initial investigations by the police implicated Collins Dauda in the unrest that marred the registration process on Saturday, May 11.
However, in a press release issued on Monday, May 13, and signed by the NDC’s Communications Director Sammy Gyamfi, the party vehemently refuted the allegations made against Mr. Dauda.
The party argues that the altercation was instigated by thugs associated with the New Patriotic Party (NPP), and NDC members were forced to retaliate in defense of their members who were attacked.
As a result, the NDC is demanding the immediate release of Collins Dauda and urging law enforcement to apprehend the actual perpetrators responsible for the disturbances.
“We wish to place on record that, at no point was the Member of Parliament for Asutifi South, Hon. Collins Dauda present at the Kukuom registration centre on Saturday, 11th May 2024.”
“Contrary to the claim by the Ghana Police Service, Hon. Collins Dauda was busily monitoring the ongoing registration exercise in his constituency, Asutifi South and was nowhere near the incident at Kukuom which is located in the Asunafo South constituency,” an excerpt of the statement said.
