A devastating dam burst in Kenya’s Mai Mahiu area, north of Nairobi, has resulted in dozens of casualties, as confirmed by the Kenya Red Cross to the BBC.
Local Governor Susan Kihika has also confirmed the deaths, although the exact number remains provisional.
The disaster occurred when water overflowed from the dam, sweeping away numerous homes and vehicles in Kamuchiri village. This tragic event follows heavy rains that have been battering various parts of Kenya.
Rescue teams are currently engaged in efforts to locate survivors buried under the mud, with concerns that the death toll could increase significantly. The major road from Nairobi to Mai Mahiu has been cut off due to debris, including rocks, mud, and logs.
Earlier, the Kenya Red Cross had transported several individuals to a health facility in Mai Mahiu due to flash flooding. These recent deaths add to the toll of over 100 casualties from heavy rains and flooding in the country since last month.
