Arne Slot has expressed his ambition to succeed Jurgen Klopp as the manager of Liverpool at the end of the season.
Liverpool has initiated discussions with Feyenoord regarding Slot’s potential appointment.
Slot confirmed his interest in the position to ESPN prior to Feyenoord’s 3-1 league triumph over Go Ahead Eagles on Thursday.
“It seems clear to me that I would like to work there,” Slot said.
“All I can say about it is that the clubs are in negotiations. I’m in the waiting room.”
He added that he was “confident” Liverpool and Feyenoord would be able to reach an agreement.
Arne Slot, aged 45, guided Feyenoord to the Eredivisie title in 2022-23 and this season’s Dutch Cup, attracting interest from clubs like Tottenham Hotspur and Leeds United in the past.
Liverpool will need to negotiate with Feyenoord for Slot’s appointment, as he does not have a release clause for this summer; however, one exists in his contract, but it can only be activated next year.
Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk has praised Slot’s playing philosophy, suggesting it would align well with the club’s style. Van Dijk described Slot as “one of the better Dutch coaches at the moment.”
Slot is known for his attacking style of play, his strong personality, and his ability to develop players, all of which are believed to make him the preferred candidate for Liverpool.
Slot took over as Feyenoord manager in 2021 and has expressed interest in managing in the Premier League, having been linked with Spurs in 2023.
While Xabi Alonso was linked with the Anfield vacancy, he announced in March that he would stay with Bayer Leverkusen. Sporting Lisbon’s Ruben Amorim was also rumored to be of interest.
Jurgen Klopp has been Liverpool’s manager since October 2015 but announced in January that he would be leaving at the end of the season.
