Four police officers in Kenya have been arrested for their suspected involvement in aiding a human smuggling and trafficking operation.
The arrests came after detectives raided a house near Nairobi where 37 Ethiopians were being held.
The migrants, who were en route to South Africa in search of better lives, told Kenyan authorities their story.
This incident sheds light on Kenya’s role as a transit route for Ethiopian migrants seeking to enter South Africa illegally.
The migrants, primarily men from Ethiopia’s Oromia and SNNP regions, typically enter Kenya through the Moyale border point before continuing their journey through Tanzania to reach South Africa.
Authorities are now searching for the owner of the house and other individuals involved in the smuggling ring. The United Nations migration agency IOM has highlighted the challenges faced by migrants along this route and the risks associated with human smuggling and trafficking.
